Love this: Latin 101 enrollment is surging in Australia and professors are crediting Harry Potter with giving the ancient language a little magic. Accio, Lingua Latin textbook!
It also helps, say students at the University of Western Australia, that Latin helps them decipher scientific terms - and that the stories in their Lingua Latin text read like episodes of "As the World Turns" - except that Marcus joins the Roman Legion instead of, you know, waking up from a coma only to find that his long-lost twin is actually his plastic surgeon. Well, maybe that happens too.
The numbers aren't huge - 129 students are taking Latin 1 at UWA, but that's a 150% jump over last year. The University of Sydney is seeing jumps in its ancient history classes too, and the University of Melbourne plans to add both Ancient Greek and Latin next year. Now, if they could just add some of those cool moving staircases, talking portraits and a Quidditch pitch, I'll be perfectly happy.
