It's hard to refrain from going after such an easy and oh-so-inviting target - so who could blame Jimmy Kimmel from poking fun at Humboldt State University's Institute for Interdisciplinary Marijuana Research? To be fair, the actual institute studies the economic, political and social issues surrounding marijuana, not stoner advocacy, and it is not housed in the hilarious graffiti'd van Kimmel showed on TV. But what I love here is that Humboldt university president Rollin Richmond and student body prez Ellyn Henderson responded by sending Kimmel a good-humored note asking him to be their 2013 commencement speaker. "We figure you owe us," they wrote.
Fingers crossed that Kimmel accepts the invitation. It's easy to deliver a cliche-riddled, stupefyingly boring graduation speech, but it's really hard to deliver a really great one - like author Neil Gaiman and actors Jane Lynch and Peter Dinklage did last year. Jimmy might be up for the challenge - and legions of bleary-eyed college parents and their progeny would thank him for it. Besides, he owes them.
