Last year’s most alarming health scare – a strange new flu that hit healthy teens and 20somethings particularly hard – came to a quiet close in February, after sickening some 89,000 people.

At its peak in November 2009, the tally of H1N1 or swine flu cases, conducted by the American College Health Association, showed the disease hitting 95% of the nation’s universities, with 6,400 new cases each week. By February 2010, that number had dropped to 507 new cases a week on just 46% of the campuses. And parents everywhere heaved a huge sigh of relief.

This fall, the H1N1 immunization was included in the regular influenza vaccine.
