In most fields, students have the option of masters or doctoral programs. But a masters of fine arts or MFA is a two- to three-year program in film making, creative writing, visual arts, theater or another of the performing arts. It's an applied arts program for students who want to be working artists. Some universities offer both degree programs, some just one.
MFA programs typically run a year longer than an MA - master of arts - and the vast majority of those courses is performance-oriented, rather than equal parts liberal and performing arts.
